Charan Narzary was an Indian Bodo writer, poet, and political figure. He is best known for his leading role as founder of ‘Udhayachal‘ movement.
He was born on 28th May 1933 at Haatimata village under Kokrajhar district (then Goalpara) to Bodo speaking family.
He passed his matriculation examination in 1955 from Kokrajhar Govt. High School, B.A. from Cotton College in 1959, M.A. from Guwahati University in 1961, and LL.B. in 1962.
He served as a professor at Kokrajhar Govt. College, practiced law at the Kokrajhar Court, and served as a Member of Parliament (M.P.) from 1977 to 1980 and a Member of the Legislative Assembly (M.L.A.).
He was an active litterateur and social worker who contributed significantly to Bodo language and culture.
He wrote number of books to his credit. Some of his famous writings are ‘Anaru Thu Sigang’ (poem), Jwngnw Swrang Nangou (essay), The Dream of Udhayachal.
He breathed his last on 23rd July 2019 at a private hospital in Guwahati. He was 86 of age.
He founded Plain Tribals Council of Assam (PTCA) in 1966, a militant agitation for a separate tribal and indigenous Scheduled Caste communities state, to be called Udayachal. He served as the General Secretary of the organization under the leadership of a well-known poet and politician Samar Brahma Chaudhury.
Narzary elected to the Lok Sabha, lower house of the Parliament of India from the Kokrajhar Constituency in Assam in 1977 as an independent candidate.
