Lakheswar Brahma, also known by Sanjarang was well-known an Indian poet, writer, cultural activist, social worker and teacher by profession. He was the author of masterpiece work in Bodo language ‘Bwisagu Arw Harimu’.
He was born on 1st of May 1941 to the Bodo speaking family at Bathopara village of Panbari under Chirang district.
Lakheswar Brahma was highly educated and professor of Bijni College in History.
He was always a man who cared about the future of the people in the area and their kids. He had deep, honest talks with his friends to get things done the way he thought best. His intellectual friends totally got how he thought and what he planned to do, so they went ahead and helped him with the community work.
As a social worker he was the president of Bodo Sahitya Sabha, founder of Bijni Town, founder of Bijni Sports Association, Kherai Bathousali and one of the founders of Bijni College, Bijni under Chirang district.
He worked for the benefit of everyone in the Bijni region, making everyone sure could gain from it, despite his own exhaustion and challenges. He played a huge role in founding the Bijni Town, and his efforts in establishing the Bijni College for educating future generations are clear in the region’s history. He even started selling goods himself to help develop the town and taught people about financial awareness.
His work on developing the Bodo language and literature is a big inspiration for youths. The Bodo people always remember him for that.
Many of his literary works are selected as syllabus for the textbook and reference from high school to university level.
Lakheswar Brahma selected as a president of Bodo Sahitya Sabha in 1977. He was very active and hard woking as well as closely related to the organization since 1970 and till his death.
He was died on 2nd of September in 1983 at the age of 42.
After his death, he known as Sanjarang by sobriquet.
The Bodo Sahitya Sabha has been conferring Sanjarang Lakheswar Brahma Cultural Award every year since 2004 to honour him for his contributions to Bodo literature and society.
Posthumously the noted Bodo folk singer Jwhwlao Nileswar Brahma awarded as first Sanjarang Lakheswar Brahma Cultural Award in 2004.
In 1999, he posthumously awarded Someswari Brahma Literary Award by Bodo Sahitya Sabha for his work ‘Bwisagu Arw Harimu’.
The Bijni College Bodo Literary Society, authority and students union celebrates his death anniversary as Sanjarang Lakheswar Brahma Memorial Day annually for his contributions for Bijni College as well as in the society.
